At their annual GTC conference on Tuesday, the chipmaking giant, yes, the same one that can’t keep its H100 GPUs on the shelf, announced something nobody quite expected. Instead of just selling you the shovels for the AI gold rush, they’re open-sourcing their own pickaxe.
Meet Ising, the world’s first suite of open-weight AI models designed specifically to accelerate… Well, everything.
“Everyone keeps asking us for more computers,” said Jensen Huang, NVIDIA’s leather-jacket-clad CEO, during a keynote that had the vibe of a rock concert mixed with a thermodynamics lecture. “But computing is useless if the models themselves are slow. So we built Ising to fix physics.”
Wait, ‘Ising’? Like the Magnet Thing?

The name is a hat-tip to the Ising model, a mathematical toy from statistical mechanics that explains how magnetic spins flip. In classic NVIDIA fashion, they’ve turned a 100-year-old physics problem into a marketing moment. The Ising models are apparently built from the ground up to run stupidly fast on NVIDIA hardware (shocking, right?) by mimicking how magnetic domains align. The result? Ising-Meso (14B): The workhorse. NVIDIA claims it beats Llama 3 on code generation by a solid 12% while using 30% less memory.

Unlike Meta’s Llama or Google’s Gemma, which come with those annoying “if you have more than 700 million users, call us” clauses, NVIDIA says Ising is truly open. You can fine-tune it, distill it, or even sell shoes with it baked into the sole. No legal headaches.

Look, NVIDIA isn’t a charity. While the model weights are free to download from Hugging Face starting today, the company has optimized the architecture so aggressively for their own DGX Cloud that running Ising on AMD or Intel hardware is technically possible, but practically a slideshow.
