Albertsons Media Collective Brings Retail Signals to YouTube with Google Commerce Media Suites

Albertsons Media Collective, the retail media arm of one of the nation’s largest grocery chains, announced today a new integration with Google Commerce Media Suites that will allow brands to tap into real-time shopping signals directly on YouTube.

The partnership marks the first time a grocery retailer has connected its first-party purchase data to YouTube’s video ecosystem at this scale, giving advertisers the ability to serve relevant ads to viewers based on what they’ve actually bought or skipped in Albertsons stores.

“We’re not guessing what someone might want to cook for dinner,” said Kristi Argyilan, senior vice president of retail media at Albertsons. “We know what they put in their cart last Tuesday. Now we can bring that signal straight to YouTube in a way that feels timely, not intrusive.”

The integration works through Google’s Commerce Media suite, which stitches together retailer transaction data with Google’s audience tools. When a shopper buys a specific brand of pasta sauce or diapers at an Albertsons-owned store, including Safeway, Vons, and Jewel-Osco, that signal can help determine whether they see a YouTube ad for a complementary product or a loyalty-driven offer.

For brands, the new capability means less reliance on broad demographic targeting. A baby food company, for example, could reach verified parents who recently purchased formula, then follow up with a YouTube recipe video for toddler meals weeks later.

“Retail media has been stuck in the lower funnel search results, sponsored listings, checkout pages,” said Sean Downey, president of Americas and global partners at Google. “Albertsons is showing how commerce data can fuel full-funnel storytelling. YouTube is where people go to discover, and now those discoveries can tie directly to real purchase behaviour.”

The move comes as retailers race to challenge Amazon’s dominance in advertising. Walmart, Target, and CVS have each expanded their media networks in recent years, but grocery data has remained especially sensitive. Albertsons has moved carefully, offering anonymised, opt-in-based data sharing that it says prioritises customer trust.

Initial tests with several packaged goods brands showed a measurable lift in both online and in-store sales, according to internal figures shared by Albertsons. The company declined to name the brands but said results exceeded standard YouTube campaign benchmarks for return on ad spend.

The new YouTube inventory is now available through Albertsons Media Collective’s self-service platform and via managed campaigns. Advertisers can layer in other retail signals such as store loyalty card data and digital coupon redemptions, alongside Google’s own contextual and audience tools.

For shoppers, the ads will carry standard YouTube controls and disclosures, with a note that they appear based on Albertsons’ shopping activity. Users can opt out of retail-based targeting through their loyalty account settings.

“The future of advertising isn’t more ads,” Argyilan added. “It’s the smarter ones. When a recipe video shows up after someone just bought chicken and broccoli, that’s not creepy. That’s helpful.”
