Why You’re Really Doing This
Before logos or launch dates, answer honestly: why?
Not the polished investor answer. The real one.
Maybe you’re tired of building someone else’s dream. Maybe you watched your parents struggle and refuse to live that way. Maybe you just love making ceramic mugs and want that to be your whole life.
Whatever it is, write it down where you can see it. On hard days—and there will be hard days—this pulls you forward. Not strategy. Just the raw why that got you here.
What Your Customers Actually Mean
Customers are almost always right about what’s wrong, and almost always wrong about how to fix it.
“I wish this was cheaper” doesn’t always mean slash prices. It might mean you haven’t communicated your value. “I don’t have time for this” doesn’t always mean simplify. It might mean you haven’t shown why it’s worth making time for.
Listen underneath the words. What’s the frustration they can’t articulate? What need are they circling?
You don’t have to do everything customers ask. But understand why they’re asking.
Write in Pencil
Write your business plan in pencil. Keep the eraser handy.
I’ve watched entrepreneurs spend months perfecting plans that became obsolete the moment they talked to a real customer. That’s not failure. That’s the point.
Your plan is your current best guess. Nothing more. Update it constantly. Throw whole sections away when you learn better. This isn’t lack of vision. It’s paying attention.
The businesses that die are the ones so attached to their original plan they can’t see the better path emerging right in front of them.
Your Brand Lives in the Small Things
We obsess over colors and fonts and whether the logo needs an icon. Those things matter.
But your brand is what people say when you’re not in the room.
It’s whether you respond to emails within a reasonable timeframe. Whether your packaging feels thoughtful or thrown together. Whether you fix mistakes without making customers fight for it. A hundred tiny interactions that add up to one big feeling: I trust these people, or I don’t.
You can’t Photoshop that. You just earn it, one interaction at a time.
Choose People Carefully
You’ll spend more waking hours with colleagues than family. Choose them for what they are, not what you hope they’ll become.
Not just for skills—skills can be learned. Choose for curiosity. For honesty. For the ability to say “I was wrong” without it feeling like defeat.
And sometimes you choose wrong. Sometimes someone isn’t a fit and everyone knows it but no one says anything. The cost isn’t just their salary. It’s the energy drain on everyone else, the lowered standards, the silent resignation of your best people wondering why you tolerate mediocrity.
Letting someone go is hard. Dragging out the inevitable is worse.
Money Is Information
Run your business like you plan to be doing this awhile.
Know your numbers not because investors demand it, but because you can’t make good decisions without good information. Be thoughtful about spending without being stingy. Build margins that can weather a slow season.
I know it’s tempting to chase growth at any cost. The stories we celebrate are usually about billion-dollar valuations and overnight success. But most real businesses grow steadily, unglamorously, by serving customers well and keeping promises.
That growth won’t get you on magazine covers. It will let you sleep at night.
The Doubt Doesn’t Go Away
Some mornings you’ll stare at the ceiling and imagine how much easier life would be with a regular paycheck. You’ll watch competitors get attention you feel you deserve. You’ll lose customers you worked hard to earn.
This isn’t failure. This is the actual texture of building something.
What separates people who make it isn’t that they never doubted. It’s that they learned to hold doubt in one hand and determination in the other, and keep going anyway.
Success Isn’t a Trophy
Nobody told me this until I had been doing it for years: success doesn’t feel like winning.
It doesn’t come as a single triumphant moment. It builds up gradually, almost invisibly. A returning customer you recognize. An email from someone who says your product made their day better. A month when you don’t lie awake worrying about payroll.
These moments don’t make a great highlight reel. But they add up to something real: a business that serves real people, provides real jobs, and sustains a real life.
Not the exit. Not the valuation. Just the quiet, ongoing privilege of building something useful and watching it grow.
Keep Going
You’ll hear a thousand opinions about running your business. Some will help. Some will contradict each other. Some will make you feel like you’re doing everything wrong.
Listen to your customers. Listen to your team. Listen to your gut when something feels off. But you don’t have to listen to everyone.
This is your business. Your decisions, your mistakes, your victories. You’ll figure out what works, partially by knowing what you’re doing and partially by making it up as you go.
That’s not a flaw. That’s the whole point.
