“Some people will find this annoying,” Kyle acknowledged. “They’ll wonder why they have to verify their age to talk to a bot. But the alternative – letting children form dangerous attachments to unregulated AI – is simply unacceptable in a civilized society.”

The regulations take full effect in September, with a transition period allowing companies to adjust their systems. Ofcom has indicated it will begin accepting complaints about non-compliance immediately, however, signaling an intent to enforce aggressively from the start.
